Reception children should be orally retelling their story for an adult to write. They then may want to copy some of it for themselves. Ask your child to help spell phonetically plausible words by sounding them out for you as you write them.

Read a traditional tale together. Make a story map to show what happened.

Change the main character to a different one and amend your story map.

For example Jack and the beanstalk could become Amelia and the beanstalk.

Write the beginning of your story

(could be on paper or word processed)

*Edit your writing, reading it aloud to spot mistakes and omissions. Edit your spelling with the support of an adult.

Write the middle of your story

 

*Edit your writing, reading it aloud to spot mistakes and omissions. Edit your spelling with the support of an adult.

Write the end of the story

 

Read your finished story aloud to someone at home or a teddy bear.
