Reading
At Kingswood School, we aim to develop proficiency in reading skills alongside a real love of reading.
Our reading journey starts in Reception where the children begin to learn to read with daily phonics lessons. We use the No Nonsense Phonics Programme which is ambitious and enables our Reception and Key Stage One children to quickly develop the skills to decode and blend sounds in words.
In Reception, they will also experience hearing and joining in with many stories, poems and rhymes being read to them every day. They also have a lovely book corner with a great range of texts for them to choose from.
In KS1, we continue our daily phonics lessons every morning. We also begin to have whole class guided reading sessions which cover a range of genres. The children love the opportunity to talk about what they have read and to really develop their comprehension skills.
Whole class guided reading sessions continue in Key Stage 2. Throughout each year, we ensure that our children get to experience a wide range of vocabulary rich, thought-provoking texts. Children engage in discussions about the meaning of words throughout the text and then answer a range of questions focusing on one of the key reading skills from the VIPERS model. VIPERS stands for vocabulary, inference, predict, explain, retrieve and summarise.
Our love of reading doesn't end at school! In Reception and Key Stage 1, children take home beautiful picture books to share with their families, along with their phonically decodable reading books. This gives parents an opportunity to read vocabulary rich texts at home and to demonstrate their own love of reading. In Key Stage 2, children are encouraged to read their chosen books at home four times a week.
Our school council organises fun events to encourage everyone to enjoy reading across the year. Reading Breakfast with our parents ( whilst wearing our pyjamas) has been a huge success this year!
